An innovative alliance of consumers and senior staff at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Emergency Department (ED) was recently recognised for their strong collaborative partnership.

The FSH ED Consumer Advisory Group was presented with the Excellence in Strengthening Partnerships Award at the inaugural South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) Excellence Awards, which recognises staff of the health service who demonstrate excellence each and every day.

Consumer Advisory Group Chair Jane Pearce said it was an honour to be one of the award recipients.

“As the only group of its kind in WA, we offer the valuable perspective of consumers outside health care,” Ms Pearce said.

“Each consumer representative has had a personal experience with an emergency department as a consumer and no prior experience working in health, which means they are able to offer a fresh approach to problem-solving.

“To be appreciated and recognised at this level was a lovely surprise,” she said.

SMHS Chief Executive Paul Forden said he was continually impressed by the achievements of staff working across SMHS.

“In an intense environment such as the ED, there are few opportunities to focus on the non-medical perspectives of the patient and visitor experience,” Mr Forden said.

“The projects undertaken by the ED CAG have improved the experiences of patients who find themselves in our emergency department.”

The SMHS Excellence Awards (external site) recognise staff working across Fiona Stanley, Fremantle, Rockingham General and Murray District hospitals and community services for their commitment to excellent clinical care, great patient experience, engaging the workforce and strong community partnerships and innovation.
